Day 1, intentional

Good morning to you! Ooh, it feels good to be taking a break from facebook.

So as I mentioned before, today we're going to talk about those things we'd like to be more intentional about in our lives not only this week, but in the days to come...

It's so tempting for me to pop on facebook, answer a message or two, then scroll down, down, down looking for something interesting to read.  Truly, I'm sick of that cycle.  And it's time to get off of that train!

Several times I've wanted to give facebook up altogether.  But there is a wonderful side of it for me - namely communication with friends that don't live close and my family/cousins/aunts/uncles that live across the country.  So, there has to be a balance.

I'm sure you all have your own reasons for wanting/needing a break - maybe they're the same as mine, maybe they're completely different.

Let's start out our week by sharing a few things with each other, if you will:

  1. What are your reasons for wanting to put facebook in a time-out?
  2. What are the things you're avoiding, neglecting, or leaving out because of your time on facebook?
  3. What things do you want to be more intentional about this week and beyond?

Answer in the comments (Kind Words) below and let's get this week started! (If you've never commented here before, just mark yourself as Anonymous, then sign your comment with your first name.)  I'm off to start my day with the kids, but I'll be back to add my answers to the comments too in a bit. Also, feel free to interact by Replying to each other's comments - I think that'd be cool!

15  Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16  making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:15-16

  1. Well..I don't have facebook at all. I never have. But,I do have twitter and I think I am going to give that up instead.:)It is kinda the same thing. You go and and see what people are saying. It just takes up the time that you could be spending with the kids, doing house work, getting a craft done. All kinds of stuff is put aside so that you can go and see what "exciting things" are going on in your friends/family's lives.I think what you are doing it good!I want to spend more time with my hubby/kids and more time reading the good book!!:)

    1. Thanks, Kristina! I've never been on twitter, but I'd imagine it would/could be the same temptation as facebook. Proud of you for making this time-out apply to you!

  2. What are your reasons for wanting to put facebook in a time-out?

I have known for a long time that I use it as a distraction and an avoidance technique instead of doing what I really need to be doing. It's so easy to plop down and turn my brain off in the tangle of Facebook and checking out blogs that I follow.

What are the things you're avoiding, neglecting, or leaving out because of your time on facebook?

My big three: House duties, not being as intentional and devotional in our homeschooling, and exercise.

What things do you want to be more intentional about this week and beyond?

The aforementioned home, schooling and taking care of my body through exercise.

Thank you for this opportunity to check our hearts as a group ; ) I look forward to the riches God will reveal during this time!! Blessings ladies.

  3. I'm afraid FB will be in use for us, as Steve and I have a joint account, and it is how we help maintain contact with our baby's birth mom. This will be enve more important, if she decides to go back to the vilage, or even move out of state, as she has mentioned before.

However, we solved the family contact issue a year or two ago. We opened a private blog that all the family contributes too. It has been so wonderful to see one or 2 updates per family each week, often with a picture as well.

Meanwhile, I strongly restrict what and who we have contact with on FB. The subscribe button has been greatly used lately, not only for times sake, but for purities sake.

    1. Hi Paula! So has your adoption finalized? I'm so happy for you guys! Feel free to email me, I'd love to hear some details if you don't mind sharing. :) Great idea on the family blog, I love that. And I've just now thought about using the subscribe button on facebook... that will be employed when I return. Blessings on your family.

    2. We are done, except for the judges signature. We had to wait ten days, through the bio parents waiting period. The tenth day was Saturday!
      I'll email you pictures.

  4. I'm taking a break from Facebook, in part for all of the above mentioned reasons; house duties, more time in the word, family time, etc. But a large part of it is that we are taking a "break" from our church, and a large part of the posts on my FB are from my fellow churchgoers, and it's ALL about how great our church is and SO FOCUSED on the church. Not God. It's a hard line to walk, for me, to not judge them, so I needed to distance myself, and with still having everything in my face on FB, it wasn't happening.

I am really hoping that God will do some work in my heart, and bring some healing through this. Thanks for bringing this opportunity and accountability, Amanda. You are dear...

    1. Hi Terri, Sounds like you've made solid choices all around... and distancing yourself is never a bad idea, especially when you need some time to think/pray. So glad you're here, and am so happy to have this time to re-connect with you. :)

  5. Okay, here are my answers:

    1. What are your reasons for wanting to put facebook in a time-out?
Too much time wasted on the computer, wanting more purposeful time with the kids/babies, needing a break to re-prioritize my daily life and seeking God's will for me

    2. What are the things you're avoiding, neglecting, or leaving out because of your time on facebook?
There are several things being neglected at times: housework, homeschooling to it's fullest potential, playtime on the floor with the little ones.

    3. What things do you want to be more intentional about this week and beyond?
Solid, fruitful time homeschooling, time spent playing, a more focused mind resting in God's presence, pre-planning meals, sticking to my housework plan
