I know you don't want to be changed, but...

This morning she woke with the intensity of a firecracker. There was no adorable baby babble or sweet calls for mama coming from down the hall; she simply screamed and yelled, moving me into her room much earlier than I'd expected. Usually, the moment I enter her room and rescue her, she moves seamlessly from gloom and doom to bright and sunny. As if she forgot she was howling like an animal caught in a trap just seconds before.

But today, she had her angry eyebrows affixed permanently onto her little face. (Thank you, Toy Story.) Upon lifting her out of her crib, I realized the diaper had leaked through and her red footie pajamas were now soaked. Immediately, I laid her down in front of my kneeling form to change her into something fresh and clean. But she resisted, coming completely unglued.

She tried to twist and turn every which way to get out of my grasp. But since I'm a mama who is not about let a child win a battle of the wills, I persisted. Rolling her back over again and again, keeping my heart set on what was best for her. Until finally, I stood her twenty-one pound body up so she was eye to eye with me and said,

"Emmalie, Mama needs to change you. I know you don't want to be changed, but you'll feel so much better when I'm done. I need you to be still for me."

And she did. She kept her brow furrowed, and gave me a bit of a stink eye, but didn't move or make a noise while I cleaned her up.

The words I said to my crabby baby replayed over and over in my mind. Then He spoke into my thoughts. Those words are for you, Amanda.

"I need to change you. I know you don't want to be changed, but you'll feel so much better when I'm done. I need you to be still for me."

you've come a long way, baby

{37 weeks pregnant, 2 weeks, 4 months, and 11 months}

I shared this comparison photo collage HERE on the facebook page yesterday, but I thought I'd share it here too since some of you aren't on facebook.  If you are on facebook, consider joining me there!

I love being able to compare how far we've come!  I took pictures all through my pregnancy in this exact spot on my kitchen too... I'm so glad I did.

Today, we're celebrating the last day of school - but I guess we should have celebrated yesterday since we've not done a lick of school today!  We've been too busy celebrating.  We turned in our quarterly work samples and semester progress reports to our umbrella school, bought some donuts (and ate them,) went to the park, grabbed lunch, then went to our dear friends' adoption fundraiser yard sale!

Great day!!!

School's out for summer!

11 months

Today is little Miss Emmalie Claire's 11 month birthday!

As you can see, she is quite the little ham.  And just two days ago, she pulled herself up to a stand for the first time!

Oh, how we love having this little peanut in our lives.  She is a true blessing and a definite mark of redemption in our lives.  We praise God for you, Emmy.

so good

Feeling overwhelmed today by God's goodness in the gift of this little girl.  To think we could have missed it.

When society says you have enough or too many children,  God whispers: "Keep your eyes on me."

When self seeks to trap you in the lie that it'll be too hard, God affirms:  "Keep you eyes on me."

Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.

tongue-tied and allergic to eggs {my poor baby}

Since Emmalie was born last June, she's had various issues with food.  I can't possibly go into all of her little seasons of being finicky, fussy, and downright mad here in this post - but I have always sensed something was off.  She's been at the bottommost percentage on the growth charts (today she weighed 13 lbs. 15 oz. at 9 months) and coupled with her issues with nursing and recent vomiting, I just knew something was up.  But she always checked out just fine.  Just a petite little thing.  And adorable.

This week, two realizations have been made about the little Miss and food.

Shortly after she turned 6 months, I tried a soft-boiled egg yolk as one of her first foods.  Emmy's  nurse practitioner recommended the book, Super Nutrition for Babies and it has loads of great information in it for not only babies, but toddlers and older kids too.  Anyways,  the book recommends soft-boiled egg yolk as a first food (rice cereal is known as a C.R.A.P food - seriously it's an acronym for ahem - bad for your baby foods - it turns right to sugar in their systems and it WAY constipates my baby girl.)  The third time I tried the egg yolk, Emmy threw it up about two hours later.  I thought that she was just a tad late in getting the stomach bug we all had just recovered from - but nevertheless, I didn't try another egg yolk for 3 months until I tried it again 2 days ago.  Again, she threw it up in a couple hours.  I finally had my doubts about eggs for her confirmed... a possible allergy! I just learned that most children who are allergic to eggs are allergic to the protein that's in the egg whites, but some react to the protein in the yolk.  The hard things is that I'd been eating eggs like a madwoman since I can't have grains, sugar, or dairy right now, and off course the egg was getting to Emmy through my milk.  EGGS!  How will I eat without eggs!  Well, I've made it two days on just meat, veggies, coconut milk, nuts, and fruit - I'm still alive, so I guess I'll be okay.  And I'm praying that Emmy's tummy and demeanor will change soon.

I am sick to think of all of the eggs I've eaten, and the trouble I possibly caused her.  Poor baby.

So that was realization number #1.

#2 was realized today at her 9 month well-baby visit today to do a weight check.  Last time she was in, I wondered about her tongue since it seemed sort of crowded under her tongue.  Our practitioner looked last visit, but didn't really see anything alarming.  But this time, she took another look - and was shocked at what she saw.  A tongue-tied baby.  It's when the tissue that connects the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth is too short and tight, causing the movement of the tongue to be restricted. She apologized and looked like she may tear up for not noticing it last time, since she remembered me mentioning it.  So we now have a referral to have her checked out by another Dr., since they didn't feel comfortable doing the "clip" in office with her being 9 months old.  So hopefully soon and as painlessly as possible, I'll have a happier and tongue-loosed baby!

It feels so good to have my God-given mama instinct confirmed by a real diagnosis.
I'll be so interested to see if all of this helps our girl!!

Sitting Lessons and the Longest Thus Far

Emmalie is nearing 9 months old, (on March 15th) and is still a tiny peanut of a girl!  She's doing those baby milestones at a slower rate than the rest of the baby crowd - it's hard to sit up and stay there when you only weigh 14 pounds.  She is beginning to sit by herself for a brief period before she unexpectantly topples over.  We love teaching her, and I love how everyone gets in on it.

I've known this little one for 18 months - 9 months in, 9 months out!

9 months also means that I've been able to nurse 3 months longer than any of our other babies!  Thank you, vitamin D.  I've been hoping to make it to a year, which has been my dream with each baby, and it looks like there's no end in sight!  I've never experienced having to wean a baby. That'll be new. The milk always just disappeared overnight it seems.  So sad, and so sudden!  But not this time!  Here's the rundown of how long I nursed the first four babies I gave birth to before I couldn't produce anymore even with pumping and other tricks:

  1. four months
  2. four months
  3. six months
  4. three weeks (I was severely low in vitamin D and had a low thyroid and didn't know it - it took two years and several doctors to figure this out!)

I'm so thankful we've made it this far - even though at times it would have been grand to give this little one a bottle so Jeremy could help, he was so willing, but little Miss Emmalie was not.  She won't take one.  We just chock it up to God answering our prayer to be able to nurse until a full year in a way we didn't imagine.  Because He does that, you know.

3 changes to make for baby that make a big difference

As we've cared for our babies through the years, we've settled into a way of living and doing all things baby that makes the most sense to us.  We've learned some tricks and tips along the way to preserve our sanity, time, and money and I'd love to share them with you here.

1.  Lay Your Baby Down Awake.  We've had a baby in the house near constantly for the last 12 years, and the most important thing I could tell you if you were a new parent is to do everything within your power to lay your baby down for naps and bedtime when they are still awake.  Even in those newborn days when it seems as if baby sleeps 'round the clock, don't give in to the temptation to rock, nurse or pacify your baby to try to get them asleep.  Babies who learn to fall asleep without help in those early days, will continue to lay down peacefully and sleep in longer stretches because they don't wake up confused wondering where in the world that warm body went that helped them drift off. (We use these in the first few months - can you say lifesaver?) Even if they wake up unexpectantly in the middle of a nap, they can drift back off to sleep without help.  And that's a good thing for an exhausted and busy mama.  We know by now that it isn't a fluke, seven babies proves that!  I'm sure if you asked a new parent what they dream of most, they'd say sleep!  And one of these (on the waterfall setting) wouldn't hurt either - we smartened up by baby #6, when this mama was tired of shushing everyone at naptime.  It drowns out all noises.  So fab!

2.  Make Your Own Pureed Baby Food.  This is something we started with baby number 4, after we realized just how easy it was to make and freeze.  We make and use our own baby food for about 6 months or so, and it's so rewarding and nice to know where your baby's food has been.  (Well, sort of.  We use mostly organic produce for baby food, we're trying!)  Here are some of our favorite ways to make it.

Pears:  Remove the skin from 2-3 pears.  Cut into thin slices.  Saute' in a frying pan in extra virgin coconut oil until soft.  Puree in a blender until desired thickness.  Scoop into ice cube trays.  Remove and store in the freezer.  (I'd imagine apples would prepare well in this same way, but we buy a large jar of applesauce instead.)

Carrots, Yams, Butternut Squash:  Peel, and chop into chunks.  Heat your oven to 350 degrees.  Melt  around 4 T extra virgin coconut oil (for a full pan full) in a 9x13 pan in your preheating oven.  When melted, remove from the oven and put in your veggies, coating them in the melted oil.  We put all three kinds of veggies in the oven in the same dish, then separate into the blender when the time comes.  (You can mix the varieties too and they come out great!)  Bake for 1.5 hours, stirring every 30 minutes.  Puree roasted veggies in the blender.  Scoop into ice cube trays.  Remove and store in the freezer.

Two fruits you don't have to do anything to to feed it to baby other than mash with a fork is avacado and banana.  I'd imagine that any kind of fruit or veggie could be prepared in one of these two ways and turn out fantastically.  I'd love to hear your baby food sucesses!

Emmalie loves all of these different foods, and it's so satisfying to make them ourselves!  Not to mention the cashola it saves us in the long run.  Each round of pureed food lasts around 3-4 weeks for her.  And that's with a mixture of all sorts of fruits and veggies.  We still keep commercial baby food on hand to bring with us in the diaper bag for outings.

3.  Give Cloth Diapering a Whirl.   To me, cloth diapering was something those earthy, granola types did.  No offense, I just knew I wasn't one of them.  When our 5th baby came along, I was ready to give it a try.  It was painful to think about all of the disposable diapers we'd thrown away over the years, and all of the money that flew out the window with them.  It took Jeremy and I seeing someone we knew, in action cloth diapering, and telling us it was going to be okay.  We were eager to save money, first off, and the landfill second.  We've cloth diapered off and on through Gabi, Levi, and Emmy - they work for different seasons and not for others for us - but it's a great investment that pays itself back within the first couple months.  And with us having 3 in diapers, it's a big deal!  Plus, they're really cute.

Oh, and if you're wondering about all of the... ahem... poo?  You would never catch me rinsing out a stinky diaper over a toilet bowl, so you'll find me using these with each diaper change.  They lay inside the diaper against baby's skin and catch all of the yuck.  They say they're flushable, but we just throw them in the outside trash.  Then you can just toss the dirty diaper in the diaper pail with no worry.

Enjoy those babies, friends - and gain back some of your sanity, time and money!

interesting stuff

It's high time I share some of my recent favorite finds around the web with you.  Shall we?

Try this on for size!  Ooh, la la... I love it.

I love Mason Jars - you too?

Dr. Leman always makes me chuckle - great parenting advice to live by too!

Eeeenteresting - maybe you're the late one, or love someone who is.

Dresses are my friend.  I love them and wear them every chance I get!  I think all of these dresses are fab, and modest too.

And lastly, a homeschool article you really should read.  If you homeschool, or are a parent, you can breathe a collective sigh of relief along with me.

Happy Weekend to you all!  We have a birthday party tomorrow to celebrate our new 5 year old sweetheart - fun, fun!

sweet relief

About a year ago I stood in the pacifier aisle at the store when I was largely pregnant, pondering which kind I would buy.  I found one that was cute, new on the market and small enough for a newborn.  We definitely didn't want her totally addicted to it, but thought it'd be nice for car rides, church, and other moments when a happy baby would be nice!  But she would. not. take. it.

She always spit it out immediately.

Until now, at 7 months!  She had been super fussy for days, a couple weeks back - and at my whits end dug out a pacifier for her, and hooray - she LOVED it.  And she has never turned back!  But the cool thing about it, is that she doesn't care if she has it or not, but when she's fussy, she takes right to it.  And it calms her down - exactly what we were hoping for!

Plus, she's just adorable with her paci.

I just love progression photos...  wow, what a difference 4 months makes!

I had the idea, today, to take another photo of Emmalie smooshed against my stomach... she's still so tiny (one week ago she weighed 10lb 15oz) but look how much bigger she is than at 2 weeks of age!  And I look smaller, that's a good thing, for us postpartum mamas, isn't it?

The sun is shining immensely today, and I've got three little ones napping and four bigger ones out on a lunch date with Grandpa.  I feel spoiled in this moment.  God just knows exactly when I'm needing this kind of encouragement.  And boy, do I need it lately!
